Club wins $11,000 grant for games

Hi,

The Club Committee wishes to announce that it has been successful with a grant application with the Queensland Gaming Community Benefit Fund to establish a major resource for board gamers in Brisbane.

For the past three years the club has actively engaged in a campaign to demonstrate the social and educational benefits of playing board games. This finally paid off with the GCBF kindly coming to our aid, with a grant for $11,000, which will enable us to build a library of multiple copies of poular game titles, with which to resource club tournaments, external events and competitions at conventions.

The LXG gratefully acknowledges the GCBF for its constant engagement with small clubs and associations and to those people who prepared letters of support for our grant, namely:

That's incredible news and a great result for the club, Keith.

So, should club members put suggestions for board games that could be added to the library to committee members?

It would be great to be able to write back to those who so kindly supported our application so they can see what was achieved by it.

Hi,

A list of games was submitted as part of the grant process but there is still a degree of flexibility to include alternate titles, so long as we resource ourselves with four copies of the games that we consider are popular enough to run tournaments in. Post any suggestions in this thread.

I have already advised the organisations who sent letters of support for our bid, that we were successful. The terms of the grant require us to advertise the Gambling Community Benefit Fund on our site and report back to them in November - we will make sure the report includes a lot of pictures of the games being played.

Darren has suggested getting Kevin Rudd to open Winter Legends as he provided one of the letters of support for us - Cav Road is in his electorate.

I would suggest Blood Bowl - with the league starting up, club copies would be good for extra boards, dice and templates.

I would also suggest the board game Descent: Journeys into the Dark and its expansions. It's a dungeon adventure game that comes with about 16 adventurer figures, and plenty of monsters -skeletons, giant spiders and the like.

The board games based on the George RR Martin Series of books would also be good, but without seeing the list it's hard to make suggestions.

Games that I recommend, and hope the club might be able to acquire some of are:

Puerto Rico
Thurn&Taxis
San Marco
Yinsh
Halali
Alhambra

All have fairly simple mechanics that all ages can enjoy, most with a decent amount of strategy.

Sweet. I've never been much of a gambler, but it was probably only a matter of time before I got dangerously addicted. I would feel too guilty to take up gambling now that we are benefiting from this grant. My family is saved

The Club Committee met on the 20/4/07 and approved a revised list of games to be purchased with our grant from the GCBF. It was agreed that we would purchase approximately $4K of games from local suppliers and $6.5K from Military Simulations. The remainder of our funds will be used to purchase cabinets to house the library.

The games selected were based on titles that are popular with LXG members and with other clubs such as Critical Mass. Statistical lists, appearing on the Board Game Geek web-site were also used as a guideline. We looked at lists such as Top 10 Games Worldwide and Top 10 Games Currently Played as well as listening to suggestions from members.

We decided to purchase multiple copies of a range of games that we know are popular at LXG tournaments or are rated as being popular games by BGG. We will also be buying single copies of a wide range of other games, from kids titles to wargames, particularly games ranked as popular world-wide that we don't see at the club and more expensive games.

We hope to have completed our purchases prior to August, so as to resource Winter Legends.

When I was young I would read a lot of Disney Comics. One of my favourite characters was Scrooge McDuck.

In particular I liked that he had a money bin and could swim around in all his money.

Now that we will have so many board games, I think that we should have a boardgame bin so that we can swim around in it.

We estimate all these will be available to members no later than the end of June 2007. Two more orders will also be placed for children's educational games and more familiar games like chess, monopoly, risk, backgammon, mah-jong, trivial pursuit etc.
