Grand Melee 2009 Results & Standings

Welcome to Grand Melee 2009!

I hope you all have a good time playing this year, and enjoyed your prizes from last time around.

This year we will try to do the same again - the overall winner will receive 12 packs, and the rest of the prize pool will be divided down the line, with at least 1 pack going to everyone who gets at least one point. More packs = more prizes.

Here's a quickrules update/reminder
Grand Melee format is used with the following changes/clarifications:

Format is Vintage Constructed

You need a DCI number to play. If you don't have one, you can register before the event and get one immediately.

1. Turn markers are not used
2. Maximum number of players is 12. The game will be split into two separate games if more than 12 players turn up.
3. Range of Influence is 2.
4. the event organiser's rulings are final.

Points: You receive one point for each payer you kill/ take out of the game directly. If you are the last player standing you also receive your own point. The last player standing is the winner, while all points scored carry across to the league standings.

Prizes:
Entry fee to each Grand Melee event is one sealed Magic Booster. Half the boosters are the prize for the winner of the event. The remainder are placed in the prize pool for the end of the year. Prizes from the pool are awarded and distributed in December.

Wizards of the Coast have provided us with foil cards to use as prizes. One foil playset is awarded randomly at the beginning of the event, as part of the random seating determination. The current league leader is not eligible for this prize. An event winner may take one or more foil playsets instead of a booster, up to the number of boosters they would have won.


Only paid up club members are eligible for the end of year prizes, but anyone can turn up and win a melee to take half the packs on the table.

Good start to the year, with lots of red decks at the table, which meant lots of early casualties. Jeremy ended up the winner courtesy of his Shivan Dragon. Old moves are good moves, eh Jeremy

February results:

David's flying, trampling, getting bigger every turn-ing vampire went round the table, knocking the other players off one by one. Ado managed to sneak in with one point, and almost took away the win with some creative defending.

Keith's return was almost triumphant, but for some timely intervention by Leanne that allowed David to attack through. Leanne and David shared the kill points, with David eventually winning through.

Ado's suggestion is that everyone gangs up on David at every other melee from now on!

David won again, this time with a couple of very large, enchanted creatures played from a 5-colour deck. Ian Royle came to the table for the first time this year, gaining 2 points on his first outing.

The good news: David didn't win

The bad news: No one won, we ran out of time.

This is the only time that has happened this year, and in a complete coincidence this is also the only time that Terry has played this year.

Terry, Jason, Leanne and Ado each kept their own point since they didn't die. Jason can feel like this winner since he also got three kills (David, Eddie, Megan).

June results:

Once again we didn't finish, Jeremy picked up a single point and that was it. I'll make a seaprate post on ways to solve this, as we should be able to finish in 1.5 hours.

We have a result! This month 7 players finished the melee in less than 1.5 hours.

It was an interesting game, with two players falling early, then a brief pause while Jason cleaned up the rest of the table. Leanne gave us a truly awesome demonstration of the spite of a player just about to die!

No results for August or September as we didn't have a quorum.

Also there won't be an event at the October unless enough people (5+) want to play a side event, as the GenCon melee is being held instead.

Hi,

It isn't intended that there are two tournaments running this weekend - the intention is to add the Gencon trophy to this mont's prizes for the winner.

I have advertised that we are running a Grand Melee on the weekend on the Gencon site to encourage the three players who did show interest in the Gencon event to turn up and maybe join LXG. Perhaps others will also turn up.

Unfortunately, I did not check with David about the current format we use, as they are different from the rules i originally posted on the Gencon site. I've corrected this today.

Okay so it looks as though there will be a 'normal' Grand Melee on Sunday, now with an extra prize of a trophy. Bring your best deck, since there is no trophy for the end-of-year winner!

Congratulation to Jason Cooper, winner of the GenCon Melee!

We had 10 players for a marathon 2.5 hour session, so it wa just as wel we started at 2.00pm instead of the usual 3.00pm.

Looks like the GM is continuing to be a major club initiative. I'm trying to rejoin a few games myself. How do you get a DCI number?

Should we post 'how to get a DCI number as a sticky on the Magic thread?
