The November meeting was a great get together with 70+ people in attendance at midday. It was a bit humid but the smarter players amongst us moved some of the tables to the covered walkways outside the main building where it was a bit cooler.
We will have to definitely increase the food and drink supplies because we keep getting eaten out of house and home by 2pm!
What did I play? I started off with a round of Viewpoint, a new card game from a local designer. The club had been sent a number of copies of the game to use for demos and tournaments. I had been playing this as a two-player game with my son and though enjoyable, it seemed to lack substance. This was my first opportunity to play the game with a sizeable group and it definitely plays much better as a game with 4 -5 players.
This ended up being a big Last Night on Earth Day for me. I played the “Defend the Mansion” scenario for the first time and romped it in with a Zombie victory – the players were spending too much time in the outlying buildings looking for cool stuff, instead of doing what the scenario was about – DEFENDING THE MANSION!
Next I introduced some other club members, new to the game, running them through the introductory “Die Zombies Die!” scenario. This was a really great session and I lost as the Zombies but there were some really theatrical moments created by the game system – like Becky the Nurse and Judy the Farmgirl, joining up in the doorway of the gun shop and unloading into the encroaching zombies with pump action shot-guns.
Finally I played “Die Zombies Die!” again with a group of kids. The Zombies triumphed with little Gracie Catton fighting bravely to the end. She resigned from the game when everyone else was dead and she had been backed into a corner by 14 Zombies…..it was time to tastefully fade away and Gracie knew it.
After helping with the lunches, I ended up helping out some new club members with learning “Shadows Over Camelot” We played without a traitor to make it a bit easier for their first game. It all went very well until we completed the Grail Quest and black grail cards started feeding into the siege engines. Then the Excalibur Quest went bottom up and also started feeding the siege. With only about 3 swords to go to win the game the siege took over and the brave knights were defeated. A valiant attempt, none the less.
I ended the day with another game of Viewpoint and really enjoyed the game. Now I have played it a few times, the strategies are starting to click in and I find I am not just trying to get points down but deliberately holding cards in my hand to help defend my cards on the table.
Other games I saw being played on the day:
Warhammer Fantasy
Mall of Horror
Mesopotamia
Puerto Rico
Magic: the Gathering
Battlestar Galactica
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
Marvel Super Heroes Boardgame
Memoir 44
Scrabble
Kids of Catan
Wanted
Big City
Tikal
I’m looking forward to the Xmas wrap up, next month!
