Some Observations on Priority and Range

This may or may not have occurred to those who play Grand Melee.

When you are out of range, you no longer receive priority in the game. As such, you cannot respond to things that happen on the table.

Triggered abilities of permanents you control will still trigger if something happens.

For example, picture a table of seven players: A,B,C,D,E,F,G

On player D's turn, players G and A are out of range and will not receive priority. However player G controls a Soul Warden.

Player E plays a creature with Flash in response to being attacked by player D. Player G's Soul Warden ability will trigger, as player E is in range of player G, giving player G 1 life. Player G gains the life but never receives priority.


Note, this also means you cannot respond to people targeting you or your permanents when you are out of range, a dirty, sneaky tactic that is sure to rear its head. For example and continuing the game above:

It's still player D's turn. Player A controls a Prodigal Sorcerer, untapped. At the end of player D's turn, player B casts Lightning Bolt on the Prodigal Sorcerer. Player A is unable to respond to this and the Prodigal Sorcerer dies.

So in the above example, if the Prodigal Sorcerer was replaced with Drudge Skeletons, it could not regenerate when damaged?

ie Crispy Skeletons?

Lyrebird: correct, as Regeneration must be activated, which you can't do without the opportunity to respond.

Shags: very, very correct.

It also means stocking up on counter magic won't save your combo if it has to sit in play to work.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Also means that if you time a spell right against someone, there will be no counterspell...
