In one of the pre-melee games on Sunday, we had a question come up of how double-strike works with trample.
After literally five minutes of ceaseless searching, I have the answer and will now copy/paste it for you
If a creature with double strike destroys the creature(s) blocking it in the first strike damage step, then it won't assign any damage during the normal damage step, unless it has trample
So if, for example, a 11/3 creature with trample and double strike is blocked by a single 1/1. The double-strike creature will 1. deal 1 damage to the blocking creature and 10 to the defending player in the first strike damage step, killing the blocker. 2. deal 11 points of damage to the defending player in the combat damage step, as trample means it can still damage the player.
Without trample it would be unable to deal damage in the combat damage step, as it is still blocked even when the blocking creature has been killed.
