I played the club edition of Talisman this week.
For those who don't know, Talisman was originally released by Games Workshop back in 1983. The object of the game is to reach the centre of the board and obtain the Crown of Command.
Each player takes on the role of a character, and here you have the usual fantasy archetypes - elf, wizard, thief and so on. Your character will gain followers and become stronger and more crafty in order to work their way towards the centre of the board.
The outer region, where all players begin, is easy enough. More treacherous is the middle region, and finally the inner region will test even well-advanced characters. No character can cross the valley of fire to reach the Crown of Command unless they possess a fabled Talisman.
A Talisman can be found or earned during the game, really they aren't that difficult to get.
This latest edition of Talisman, released last year, is a faithful remake of the original board game. The original's 'roll and move' mechanic is still present and this is probably the oddest feature, compared to today's board games. Other elements of the game remain as fun as they ever were.
If you liked the original edition of Talisman you will love this remake, as the set is well presented with good quality cards and great artwork throughout. My only issue was with the plastic counters used to represent Life, Strength and Craft. Coloured dice would have been more manageable.
If you like a metric at the end of your reviews, I'll oblige with a 7.5
