There have been some changes to the Magic rules announced recently. In club terms, this will affect all games from the July meeting forward.
I encourage everyone to read the official article here: www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/42a
Here's a brief summary:
Cosmetic Changes:
The 'in play' zone is now the battlefield. This means that creatures no longer 'come into play' they now 'enter the battlefield'.
The removed from the game zone is now called the exile zone. So instead of removing a card from the game, you exile that card.
Minor Changes:
Mulligans are now simulataneous, I think we've been doing it this way anyway.
No more mana burn. At the end of each step or phase, any unused mana you have simply goes.
Lifelink and Deathtouch are now static effects, not triggered abilities. This means that you now gain life from a lifelink creature immediately, there is no longer a wait. Likewise with deathtouch, a creature dealt damage by a creature with deathtouch is immediately destroyed. In most play situations this won't change anything, but it does alter some interactions.
Major Change:
Combat damage no longer uses the stack. There is no longer a gap between combat damage being assigned and being dealt, it happens at the same time. If you want to do anything in combat you have to do it after blockers are declared (or after first strike damage is dealt).
Also, creatures without deathtouch tha are being blocked by more than one creaure must deal lethal damage to one creature before they can deal any damage to the next. This is called 'blocking order' and is explained in the article.
As always I will be on hand during club to explain all of this. I will bring in some copies of the article at the June and July meetings too.
